  • Bearclaw Puts Finishing Touches On Slopestyle Course

At this moment, it could easily be argued that Darren Berrecloth is the busiest man in the bike industry. On top of maintaining his position in the upper ranks of freeride mountain biking, touring the hectic freeride circuit, and finding the leftover time to nurse the previous weeks war wounds from riding, Berrecloth added one more behemoth-sized item to the list. The Bearclaw Invitational.

As this goes to press, Claw is slapping the last shovel full of dirt on the hair-rising final dirt jump of his Slopestyle Course at Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island. Over 20 of the world's best freeride mountain bikers will compete this Saturday, August 4th at the second annual Bearclaw Invitational.

"This is the sickest course I've seen to date," Bearclaw states as he glances up the hill at his masterpiece. Of course he should be biased, especially considering the fact that he's the chief course designer, but then all in attendance nod their heads in agreement.

"The course we built is super-technical," adds Jimmy Deas of JDP Developments, course builder and the industry's best dirt mover. "Riders better have their a-game to the fullest for this course."

Looking at the course, the story is very straightforward. The line is straight up and down, following the fall line of Mount Washington's Green Face. A series of drops, berms, wall rides, and a monster platform step-up in the top third of the course are relentless and impressive. Off the platform, two massive bonar logs followed by big, burly dirt jumps greet riders. A massive wall ride with an optional transfer to dirt seals the deal at the end of the course. The rider busting the biggest lines of the day will rake in their fair share of the 16K prize purse.

"There's no need for a Jumbotron," states Mount Washington's PR man Brent Curtain. "You can see the whole course from every angle. Even the beer garden at the bottom by the wall ride has stellar views. There's not a bad seat in the house."

In its first year, the Bearclaw Invitational welcomed over 3500 spectators who sweltered in 30C weather and welcomed the frosty Kokanee and Lucky's available at the beer garden. The weather is looking good for the coming weekend and locals predict even larger crowd swell this year.

If you're looking to attend the biggest doggone riding spectacle on Vancouver Island this summer, here is the shakedown for the event:

Thursday and Friday practice days for all riders

Saturday 10am to 1:30pm  practice sessions

     2 to 4pm slopestyle comp

     4 to 5pm high-air comp

5 to 7pm awards and band jams for the beer garden crowd

9pm private party in Fat Teddy's

The industry trailers have already arrived, riders are filing in from around the globe, and the world's finest photographers and cinematographers are setting up for the perfect shot. The mountain is being transformed overnight into a worldwide freeriding spectacle. See you there.

The Bearclaw Invitational Slopestyle is sponsored by: Bike Mag, Rip.tv, Adidas Eyewear, Specialized Bikes, Fox Racing Shox, Dakine, Race Face, Hayes Disc Brakes, Kokanee, the Head First Army, and Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort is one of the top mountain bike and summer alpine destinations in Canada. Scenic chairlift rides and lift-accessed mountain biking run daily until September 23rd. The Resort is located 30 minutes above The Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. WestJet, Central Mountain Air and Pacific Coastal Airlines service the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ). • Bearclaw Invitational Course close to completion!

    From www.bearclawinvitational.com

Well im sure you all have been wondering whats been going on up in the hills of Mt Washington, so here it goes. Myself and Jim Deas broke ground about 2 weeks ago and the weather couldnt be better, it was 36 degrees celsius and wicked warm. We got off to a good start, Jim was flinging dirt around like there was no tomorrow and I was pushing it around in my bobcat supplied by surfwood rentals.
Darren and Jim hard at work

As any event goes there are setbacks and that we had, just after setting in a good pace of waking up at 6 am and working till dark for a couple of days I broke a hydraulic hose on the excavator, not a big deal except that the machine we rented was a link belt and it has some stupid fittings that took 3 days of running around to get it fixed. so three days of downtime not a big deal until the rain hits, for a week straight we moved dirt for the first two days of rain until the dirt was so saturated with water we had to stop so myself Jim, Ben Nick and Parker proceeded to work on wood structures in the pouring rain until the course was so muddy that we couldn’t even get our buggy that pilon tools lent us up the hill and with the forecast for the whole weekend being torrential rain we took 2 days off to let it rain and resume building when the rain stopped. Build is what we did.
Part of the course, tombstone ***
So for my opinion of the course well its definitely the sickest course I have ever seen and possibly the most technical yet burly course most riders will ever ride. Its a thing of beauty.

As the course stands right now it starts with the same drop as the year before which is a 17 foot by 20 drop into a s berm with a roller in between going left and right since I was going for the same stunts on the left and right the whole way down. Out of the berms is a very technical sub rail in to a 20 foot tall landing into a 8 foot tall hip left and right into a 35 foot tall landing into massive wall rides on both sides which will scare people, out of the wall rides is step ups onto a platform which we put dirt for the landing and the lip. So hip off the dirt filled platform into big landings into two bonar logs on both sides that is. So thats all I got to finish since time was tight for me to head up to whistler. But don’t be worried the crew will be working all this week and weekend and next week to dial everything in.

My final thoughts are I sure hope everyone appreciates all my crews and Mt Washington’s hard work and dedication to creating something awesome cuz I’ll tell ya it aint easy.

Jim awake at 7 as usual
    Jim hard at work

    Bonar logs

    Bonar logs in place
Both the bonar logs in place
Finishing one of the bonar logs
    Bonar log getting chopped

People I’d like to thank so far are my girl Alex for putting up with not seeing me and Jim Deas my dirt mover the crew, Parker, Ben, Nick, Jordie, Beecher, the Mt Washington staff foe lending a hand when we needed and supplying us with tools, surfwood rentals, Doug Harmston, and Austin at Pilon
thanx again stay posted while we get things dialled and for the time being I’m gonna go learn how to ride my bike again in whistler and ride at crankworx.
