Have you ever wondered where you stand with your fitness level? V02max and Lactate Threshold testing come to the Comox Valley

Have you ever wondered where you stand with your fitness level? Have you wanted to improve your capabilities but don’t know where to start? Peak Centre for Human Performance will be returning to the Comox Valley this coming Nov 19th & 20th to do lab assessments.

What is a Lab Assessment?

A fitness assessment is a method of measuring your body’s specific response to exercise; it is a snapshot of your current fitness level. Many types of assessments exist, however, not all of them provide the individual information necessary for proper exercise training. Predictive equations, estimation charts and perceived exertion levels provide no direct information regarding your current individual fitness level, and also fail to track fitness improvements over time.

At the PEAK Centre, we offer only direct assessments to measure your individual response to exercise. These assessments precisely determine your current level of fitness, as well as allow us to track your rate of training improvement over time. Each analysis is specific only to you and how your body responds to exercise.

Why Choose Peak Centre?

The Peak Centre is nationally accredited by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). This means that we meet all the standards required for validity, accuracy, and reliability in all our assessments. To you, it ensures that the money you invest in your health and fitness is providing you with results that are valid, accurate, reliable, and more importantly, applicable.

What tests are available on Nov 19th & 20th?

Staff from Peak Centre will be doing blood lactate and VO2Max assessments. This is your opportunity to evaluate how effective your training has been over the past few months and set some new training intensities to get you to the next performance level. Brent Armstrong of Rehab in Motion has offered to host us and we’ll be set up to offer testing on both the bike and run.

Schedule for weekend

Saturday Nov 19th

Testing – 8am – 5pm

Each test takes approx 1 hr

Following the triumphant return of the Bearclaw Invitational last week, Mount Washington is pumped and ready to keep the bike season flowing with a brand new course at their BC Cup race this weekend.

A new-school DH course will be featured this year as the top-half of Monster Mile is still under snow.

“Due to the amount of snow on the Monster Mile, our traditional downhill course, we had to make some quick decisions to change the location of our BC Cup downhill,” explains Mike Manara, Bike Park Manager at the Resort. “Our new course is on the west side of the mountain and will feature more flow and produce faster race times than we would normally see on the Mile.”

Mount Washington Alpine Resort and Cycling BC partner to bring the BC Cup provincial race series annually to Vancouver Island. The race series incorporates both downhill and cross-country disciplines of mountain biking and is held at various locations throughout the province.
Mount Washington’s event begins Saturday, August 13th with the endurance-testing cross-country and ends on Sunday, August 14th with the speed and thrills of the downhill. To bring all of the riders home, the call for this weekend’s races will be performed by freeride luminary and Director of Good Times, Brett Tippie.

Even though some of BC’s best XC and DH riders will be in attendance, you don’t need to be a pro to experience the BC Cup at the mountain this weekend.

“We have a strong history of introducing grass roots and local racers to the provincial and national races here at Mount Washington,” adds Manara. “With the support of our local riding community and bike shops across the Island, we’ve managed to produce the largest Citizen category turnouts province-wide.”

Categories for the BC Cup are wide-ranging, where competitors race from as early as 10 years of age in the U15 category to over 50 years of age in the venerable Masters category.

For all race information including course maps, racing fees, schedules, and everything you need to know for a weekend of BC Cupping, surf to Mount Washington’s BC Cup website via a front-page link at mountwashington.ca.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort’s Bike Park is open daily from 11am to 7:30pm. The resort is located 30 minutes above The Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. WestJet, Central Mountain Air and Pacific Coastal Airlines service the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ). To find out about accommodation and package information, call Mount Washington Alpine Resort at 1-888-231-1499 toll free or locally at 250-338-1386. Surf to www.mountwashington.ca for additional information including live mountain cams.

A Mount Washington Alpine Resort Media Release

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Training, competing, filming, suffering from a broken back, trail building, pneumonia, and a chronic lung infection. Its been quite the summer so far for Darren Berrecloth. Most people would’ve written off the season at pneumonia but for Berrecloth, the summer is just starting to warm up.

Darren Berrecloth working the big claw on his new slopestyle course.

“After Crankworx Whistler, it’s nice to be back on the Island and back at home, building my slopestyle course,” says Berrecloth. “A lot of people have been asking me to bring back the event over the last couple of years so we’re all fired up for the fourth edition of the Bearclaw Invitational.”

After a two-year break from hosting the event, the Bearclaw Invitational Slopestyle returns with a vengeance to Vancouver Island’s Mount Washington Alpine Resort on August 5th and 6th. The world’s best freeride mountain bikers have been personally selected by Berrecloth to compete on his signature course, on his home turf, and in front of his home crowd.

“This will definitely be one of the most challenging courses on the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour. Since it’s a gold level event, expect to see all the world’s top athletes battling it out for the points and the $20,000 prize purse.”

Riders will have to bring their A-game to the Island at the beginning of August. The Bearclaw Invitational is one of the few gold events on the tour. The higher ranking gold events contribute significant points to the standings and have the potential to make a significant impact on the overall tour rankings.
Back at the event site, watching Berrecloth working in his excavator is like watching him ride his bike; he’s in his element. In a matter of days, the site of his slopestyle course will morph from classic West Coast forest to classic freeride masterpiece.

The Invitational course is a complete rebuild and features huge dirt jumps and hips through stands of old-growth Mountain Hemlock and Yellow Cedar. And in classic Bearclaw-style, the stunts are all burly. The wooden features: wall rides, quarter pipe, jumps, and pre-requisite bonar log are all starting to take shape two weeks before the event.

The Bearclaw Invitational in 2007

“You can’t beat the natural setting for this comp. It’s a photographer’s dream to shoot and it has a very distinct look and feel,” Berrecloth adds.
The Bearclaw Invitational begins with qualifiers on Friday, August 5th at 5pm. The top 18 riders will advance to the Slopestyle finals which start at 1pm on August 6th. Riders will be judged on their best one of two runs during the finals. A High-Air comp will immediately follow the Slopestyle to determine who has the biggest boost of the weekend.

“The rider list is stacked so keep this one circled on your calendars,” says Berrecloth with the buzz of heavy machinery and the scream of his chainsaw in the background. Yep, it’s been an eventful summer so far for the Claw!

The Bearclaw Invitational is supported by Red Bull, Specialized, Go Pro, Dakine, Shimano, Kokanee, Pink Bike, Adidas Eyewear, McKays Home Theatres, Tuf Rak, and Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

This year brings BC Bike Race to Campbell River, and this year’s start is in Cumberland.

The Island Cup Series travels to Powell River and has a great time!

One would expect something called the Island Cup Series would be held on an Island. It has been the case for over 10 years, keeping to Vancouver Island with much success. In 2011 we changed that with our first foray to Powell River. This seaside community may be situated on the mainland but is connected to Vancouver Island by one ferry whereas it requires two ferry rides to connect to Vancouver.

Using BC Ferries as our schedule, 28 racers boarded the 10:10am Queen of Burnaby at Little River bound for the aptly named Sunshine Coast and new adventures. The morning fog kept the weather cool in the Comox area but we could see bright skies on the other side. Registration was done on the ferry so racers could head straight for the start line.

The warmth of spring welcomed us as we departed from the ferry for the 4km ride to the race course. We met up with more racers at the start line bringing the racer total to just over 40 racers. Powell River Cycling Association had setup the start finish at the Open Air Farmers Market on McLeod Road. This local market opens in April so we look forward to coming back later in the spring next year to enjoy this great venue.

After about a 45 minute warmup we started at 1pm on the dot. The trails were setup in a figure 8 format with a start loop and a lap point. The trails were twisty and technical with lots of loam, moss and roots. Volunteers are a great part of any event and in this case a marshal greeted racers at every junction point with bells and noise makers to cheer them on throughout the course.

At the finish racers had a chance to sit back and soak in a few rays, while treated to fresh fruit, a chip wagon and smokie grill. Podiums and awards were presented with enough prizes for everyone. To top off the day a nice short pedal brought you back down to the harbourside pubs and then the ferry for the nice relaxing cruise on a 5:15 ferry back to Comox. We were very pleased with easy schedule for hosting an event with the ferry trip bookending the day.

It was the first trip to Powell River, but we will be back for sure. Thanks to the volunteers, the Powell River Cycling Association, Norco Performance Products, Cycles Lambert, BC Bike Race, Suncoast Cycles, Taws Cycle & Sport, Massive Graphic, the Open Air Market, the City of Powell River and Cycling BC.

Our next stop for the spring Island Cup XC Series will be Cobble Hill this Sunday, March 27th. For more information, course maps, full results, photos, videos and more check out our website http://www.islandcupseries.com

We christened our brand new podium with the first winners for 2011 and for a unique trophy, giant homemade cookies!

Spring should bring warm days, sunshine and green grass. On Sunday it brought chilling winds and heavy rain to much of the Island. Ninety-six brave souls ventured to Hartland Mountain Bike Park just outside of Victoria for the first race of the season.

So far in 2011, winter has brought some big storms, lots of cold temperatures and significant snow to the Capital city. It seems to have trimmed many riders winter training and was apparent to many their off season training was less than normal. Icing on the cake for some was an additional lap for intermediate and expert class riders.

Thankfully the heavy rain stayed away save for a few drops here and there. The course was still muddy and technical but could have been much worse. It was wonderful to see full groups in all categories including beginner women, and hope this is a sign of the season to come.

We christened our brand new podium with the first winners for 2011 and for a unique trophy, giant homemade cookies!

Sponsors include Norco Products, Pearl Izumi, Cycles lambert, Gu, Continental, Niterider, and Pro City Racing. Big thanks to Pro City Racing for hosting the event and to all of the volunteers that stood in the cold wind for the duration of the day.

What a great event to kick off the Island Cup for 2011.

Our next XC Race is this Sunday March 20th in Powell River, our first trip to the Sunshine Coast!
